Kangaroo Court

This page was updated 7/26/10

Dictionary.com defines a Kangaroo Court as “a mock court set up in violation of established legal procedure.”

As it pertains to FC Spare Tire purposes, legal procedure is anything demonstrated that does not cause ridicule or a degree of shame.

So by that definition, “illegal” procedures that would be cause for restitution in Kangaroo Court include actions that include but are not necessarily limited to:
  • Booting a ball that unintentionally blasts an unsuspecting teammate
  • Going to the wrong field OR showing up at the wrong time on game day
  • Being late to a game due to female influence
  • Failing to put a corner kick in-bounds OR convert a penalty kick
  • Having family members check on your overall personal well-being via the FCST Web site
  • Not showing for a game after informing no one about it
  • Any blatantly heinous, embarrassing miss at a shot on goal
Fines for the above offenses can range anywhere from 50 cents to a few bucks. Proceeds go toward enjoying postgame pies at Pagliacci Pizza. Currently, the collected pot accumulation stands at:

$18.50

Goalkeeper Shelby Dobbs is fined $2.50 for each of the brand-new goalie gloves he left behind at the BHC game July 25 at Magnuson.

Defender Leo Berk is fined $5 for arriving to the wrong field, Marymoor, on July 25, and another $1 for paying the parking fee at Marymoor before realizing the game was at Magnuson. Mid Scot Rogers is fined $5 for receiving a yellow card late in the game vs. Team Rock on May 23 at Edmonds.

$187 was spent at Sand Point Pagliacci Pizza after games March 20 and 27 at Magnuson.

A wide-open midfielder Phil Burger is self-fined $5 for mis-playing a long cross from Mike Gill-More that might have resulted in a settle, touch and blasted score in the Gunners FC game March 14 at Shorecrest, but instead bounced funny off Burger and out for a GFC throw-in.

Forward Steve Lassiter is fined $1 for pulling up on a ball sent to him by Matt Loesch to the corner; Lassiter realized he didn't have to pull up before ultimately getting to the ball and making a cross in during the Disorderly Conduct game on January 24 at Shoreline A.

Defender Jim Stern is fined $ .50 for very uncharacteristically mis-playing out of bounds a passed ball to him that 10 out of 10 times he traps. Stern would later say he felt 20 percent off for this game for reasons unknown - but might have to do with age ...

Midfielder Matt Loesch is fined $ .50 for failing to put a corner kick in-bounds in the first half during the Disorderly game. This is higher than a Lassiter corner kick fine as we all expect more from Loesch, and even Loesch knows that.

Forward Brandon Smith is fined $5 for missing a penalty kick in the 3-0 win over FC Untied on January 17 at Twin Ponds. Smith is consistent money from the spot but somehow his shot to the left post was saved. He put in the deflection for the score, but Smith later admitted it had been years since his last PK miss.

Midfielder Matt Loesch is fined $1 for receiving a yellow card - though the situation was also lame - late in the Sea Town United 1-1 draw on Sept. 13 at Shoreline B. Forward Steve Lassiter is fined $1 for leaving behind the boots at the field with which he used to score two goals vs. the Wavebreakers on Sept. 23. Lassiter may elect to not pay such a fine - but to receive back his cleats, it will cost him $1 (this has since been paid).

Forward Isaiah Harris is fined $5 for showing up 25 minutes late to the Wavebreakers game after changing clocks in his house the night before thinking daylight saving time ended in the morning. Harris, who had woken up with plenty of time before kickoff, was 42 days early in doing so.

If it had bounced the other way it would have been right in front of the open goal.” (this has since been paid)
